"Godfather Death" features a number of allusions to WWII. Why are these allusions significant? Why does Sexton choose to retell this story?
The allusions in this story are significant because it recalls on a time where there was one man who must be obeyed, and if someone were to go against this man then he would have them killed.
Anne Sexton chose to retell this story because it states that no matter what someone does, they can never cheat death.
Good work, Kayla! This would also be a case where Sexton is critiquing the Grimm Brothers use of their stories as a nationalistic exercise; here Sexton is alluding to what happens when that nationalism runs amock (the holocaust/WWII/death).
